Educate

GENY’s core mission is to advocate for the NYS transgender, non-binary, and intersex (TGNBI) communities by engaging in education and outreach to create public understanding and influence social attitudes.  Our leadership believes that there is a severe lack of understanding by the general public of those who are “gender expansive”. The majority of New Yorkers do not understand basic gender concepts and terminology and, where there is a lack of understanding, there is fear and misinformation regarding the community of “gender-expansive” people.

Those who do not conform to gender-based stereotypes, or whose gender presentation or identity differs from the one usually associated with their anatomical sex, often experience discomfort, distrust, and aggression by “cisgender” people (those whose personal gender identity matches the designation they were given at birth). These negative emotions can progress to actions of harassment, abuse, discrimination, and violence which force most gender-expansive people into hiding or isolation. Those who are brave enough to be “out” regularly face some form of mistreatment.

Since many of the members of the gender-expansive community conceal their authentic selves, no effective steps to normalize the community can be taken. This combination continues the vicious cycle of a poorly informed general public that forces TGNBI people underground, which in turn keeps the general public from learning about TGNBI life experiences and the discrimination and violence they endure.

What is GENY doing?

Our leadership team set out to create a public education campaign that would increase understanding and respect for transgender, non-binary, and intersex New Yorkers and decrease discrimination and violence. Forums entitled “Everything You Wanted To Know About Transgender, Non-Binary, and Intersex People…But Were Afraid To Ask!” were created with the goal of providing clear information and personal stories to increase and improve the acceptance of our community. Each Forum begins with a “Gender 101” PowerPoint presentation which introduces proper language and various concepts, and is followed by an interactive panel made up of 3-8 local TGNBI community members, who tell their personal stories and put a face on the small and very misunderstood community of people.  Through this work we seek to influence the general public’s social attitudes, gain allies, and establish our community’s presence across New York State.

By January of 2020, GENY held 21 public Forums in every region in our state.

GENY has worked with colleges, churches, libraries, and other institutions to bring these forums to the widest array of people. Attendance varies, but the response has always been encouraging. Our wonderful panelists bravely share their personal stories. We provide a safe space for audience members to learn and broaden their knowledge. All questions are welcomed, and by the end of the event, attendees are more accepting and more comfortable interacting with the gender expansive community.

In addition to our Forums, we regularly hold “Gender 101” training sessions with healthcare providers, police, jails, and professional organizations to ensure improved care and relations with our community members.

Our educational work highlights the fact that transgender, non-binary, and intersex people are family members, neighbors, friends, and co-workers who simply want the same life, liberty, and happiness that everyone does.
