Advocate

For years, members of GENY’s leadership team have been on the front lines of equality and justice work. Whether we are educating government officials, speaking in public, creating media campaigns, or initiating civic engagement, GENY is committed to gaining equal rights and ending discrimination. Our mission of achieving economic, educational, racial, and social equality for transgender, non-binary, and intersex (TGNBI) New Yorkers continues to drive our work.

What is GENY doing?

Most of GENY’s early legislative advocacy was spent attempting to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act, better known as GENDA, which was finally passed on the third day of the 2019 Legislative Session! After sixteen years of demonstrations; TV, radio, and newspaper interviews; public sign-on letters; and hundreds of meetings with state Assembly Members, Senators and their staffs; our community was finally given an explicit statewide law which prohibits discrimination against transgender and non-binary New Yorkers.

In the final days of the 2019 NYS Legislative Session, we visited 105 Assembly offices to ensure passage of the “Gay & Trans Panic Defense Ban“, which was passed on the last day of the session. This legislation prevented the use of a legal courtroom defense that was employed against charges of assault, manslaughter, or murder. Prior to the passage, if someone violently attacked or murdered an LGBTQ person, New York State law allowed them to blame their actions on the victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity to reduce the sentence for their crime. The strategy looked to reduce the defendant’s criminal liability and sentencing by tapping into deep-seated biases against and stereotypes about gays and transgender people as deviant sexual predators.

In 2020, before the coronavirus hit, we met with thirty-seven state Legislators and their staffs in six weeks to educate and review legislation that would impact our community. We were successful in helping pass legislation to create gender neutral bathrooms in public spaces. We continue to push to eliminate a loitering law that profiles trans women of color, simplify changes to birth certificates, add a non-binary gender neutral “X” classification to driver’s licenses and state ID’s, and protect trans and non-binary people who are incarcerated.

We take every opportunity to educate lawmakers at the state and local levels to break down barriers of misinformation, prejudice, and ignorance. And we regularly hold “Gender 101” training sessions with healthcare providers, police, jails, and professional organizations to ensure improved care and relations with our community members.

GENY has organized rallies in Albany and other areas in response to legislation and policies that would impact the TGNBI community. We will continue to bring attention to the effects of these proposals and actions to ensure that our voices are being heard.

GENY is committed to fighting for legislation, educating public leaders, and speaking out in order to make our community members safer. We work to ensure equality for all TGNBI New Yorkers and eliminate barriers so that they can live happy and secure lives.
